Beginner Gym Tips | How to Look Like a Pro

Hey, there!

In this video, we’ll be going over a few tips for if you’re feeling a little anxious/intimidated by the gym and are trying to avoid making mistakes at the gym. Hopefully, by the end of this video, you’ll feel more comfortable, confident, and prepared to hit the gym!

Again, please remember that we have ALL made ourselves look silly at the gym at one point or another–brush it off, laugh, and try again!
There is no shame in making mistakes and finding yourself in an embarrassing moment here and there–it’s all part of the process and I’ll always be the first to say that I myself have had countless shake-my-head moments.
We live, we learn, and we try again.
The only way to get better is to get a little uncomfortable and to keep on trying.

    Another major mistake which will upset anyone who has been training a long time and just wants to train hard is people camping out on the equipment checking texts and social media between sets not realising how much time is spent between sets. This is a big mistake by many new and long time people and if and when you get serious it becomes an obstacle and it insults people who are their with a purpose and have to wait and wait for the equipment.

    Tomorrow I’m going to the gym and I’m really anxious because it’s my first time (I sometimes deal with social anxiety and I’m worried that tomorrow I’ll get one and yeah I’m going with my sister and her friends but I’m still anxious)

    hi 🙂 i have major anxiety and this video has helped calm me down a little so i just wanted to say thank you.

    i’ve been doing home workouts for a few months now and i think i’m finally ready to take it a step further.

    i will be going to the gym for the first time *ever* tomorrow and i’ve been thinking about it all day to the point where i can’t even go to sleep right now because of how anxious i am to start. thanks to this video i think i may be able to rest up before the big day!

    This video is so helpful!
    I just started going to the gym (2 weeks tomorrow to be exact) and my first week was full of anxiety. I felt uncomfortable because I wanted to lift weights, but didn’t know how to use the machines. So I was stuck on treadmill (watched Grey’s Anatomy episodes while walking 😂).
    So at the beginning of week 2, I finally found courage to go up to a fit couple working out and asked if I could train with them. They were both so sweet and welcoming and even included me in their workout routine! 😭 The girl even showed me her workout schedule. We became friends and I know one day I want to be the one to help out someone new to the gym. I’m still new, but I’ve learned a lot watching videos and asking friends for help. 🙂

    1 & 2 … No one gives a damn what you’re wearing at the gym, as long as you’re not dressing to draw attention. Wear simple gym shorts and a t-shirt, and fuckin’ get going. If you put more thought into it than that, then you’re there for the wrong reasons.

    The first time I ever went to the gym a former HS classmate was there (we’d just graduated) doing typical bodybuilder chad stuff, sitting in a chair doing bicep curls, while LAUGHING at me struggling on a machine. I never went back, that was 8 years ago. Just got a membership elsewhere and I’m excited to start focusing on me 🙂

    Hi Naomi,
    I think you are overthinking it. You wouldn’t go to a restaurant and think “i need to have a plan”. If you are enjoying urself it doesn’t matter. People like to obsess about correct form – yes there is correct form to consider but u are just moving to work. You could not know the names of the exercise and make up exercises which work effectively. You don’t need to know the name of a Romanian deadlift to practice doing one.
    Like it isn’t really common to start doing star jumps in the weight area. But is that wrong? Well no not really.

    The exercises that are commonly incorporated into mainstream workouts aren’t the ones u have to do. U don’t have to do a lateral banded walk if you are a woman. You can just stay in a squat position for 5 minute solid if you like. Not many people do but it is effective to spend time in that position. What I am saying just because something is popular doesn’t mean u must copy. Do what you think will help you. If you’re a guy and have weak glutes do some kickbacks on a bench. If you’re a woman whose glutes are already well trained maybe try hanging off a pull up bar. You don’t have to do what others do
