Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy – The Andrews Sisters (lyrics in description)
I’ve loved hearing the different ways people have come to know this song over the years. Some people heard it long ago, some heard it the first time very recently. Some know it from their relatives, some know it from their friends, some heard it on a movie or a TV show or in a video game or another YouTube video and for some, this video is their first exposure to it. It’s great to see such appreciation for a wonderful song from the 1940s and fascinating to find out about the different ways it’s still reaching audiences almost 80 years later!
“Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by The Andrews Sisters
Recorded in January 1941
Lyrics:
He was a famous trumpet man from out Chicago way;
He had a boogie style that no one else could play.
He was the top man at his craft,
But then his number came up and he was gone with the draft.
He’s in the army now, a-blowin’ reveille;
He’s the boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B.
They made him blow a bugle for his Uncle Sam.
It really brought him down because he couldn’t jam.
The captain seemed to understand,
Because the next day the cap’ went out and drafted a band,
And now the company jumps when he plays reveille;
He’s the boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B.
A-toot, a-toot, a-toot-tiddeliyada-toot!
He blows it eight-to-the-bar, in boogie rhythm.
He can’t blow a note unless the bass and guitar is playin’ with ‘im.
He makes the company jump when he plays reveille;
He’s the boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B.
He was our boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B.
And when he plays boogie woogie bugle he was busy as a “bzzz” bee,
And when he plays he makes the company jump eight-to-the-bar;
He’s the boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B.
Toot toot toot-tiddeliyada, Toot-tiddeliyada, toot-toot,
He blows it eight-to-the-bar.
He can’t blow a note if the bass and guitar isn’t with ‘im,
Ha-ha-hand the company jumps when he plays reveille;
He’s the boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B.
(instrumental)
He puts the boys to sleep with boogie every night,
And wakes ’em up the same way in the early bright;
They clap their hands and stamp their feet,
Because they know how he plays when someone gives him a beat.
He really breaks it up when he plays reveille;
He’s boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B.
Dat-da da-dum-da da
Dat-da da-dum-da da
Dat-da da-dum-da da
Dat-da da-dum-da da
Ha-ha-hand the company jumps when he plays reveille;
He’s the boogie woogie bugle boy of Company B!
PITCH PERFECT
Since 1925
I turn the radio on in 2022 and Iโve heard this song being played what a wonderful world it is to still have this song remembered
I always loved this tune….. I just figured out by reading the lyrics, that it’s reveille….. French for wake up. it’s not pronounced the same way in French ๐ so it’s the wake up call.
Old days of songs famous from world war 2 past 1960 I was born 1953 I still heard it in 1962
All I could imagine from this song is gunshots whistling through the air while soldiers are fighting for their live in holes, and machine guns rapidly banging
Anyone here today
Chaka!!!

The simple plan of Salvation.
1. Admit that you are a sinner and need to be saved.
(No one is good enough to go to Heaven on his own merit. No matter how much good we do, we still fall short.)
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
– Romans 3:23 KJV
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
– Ephesians 2:8โญ-โฌ9 KJV
2. Realize the penalty for sin, repent and be willing to turn from your sin.
(Just as there are wages for good, there is punishment for sin. The penalty for our sin is eternal punishment in a place called Hell.)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
– Romans 6:23 KJV
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
– Hebrews 9:27 KJV
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
– Revelation 21:8 KJV
3. Believe that Christ died for you on the cross of Calvary.
(Christ great love for us was shown when He died on the cross to pay our sin.)
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
– Romans 5:6โญ-โฌ8 KJV
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
– John 14:6 KJV
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
– 1 Corinthians 15:3โญ-โฌ4 KJV
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
– 1 Peter 2:24 KJV
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
– 1 Peter 3:18 KJV
4. Receive Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour into your heart and life through prayer.
(Everlasting life is a gift purchased by the blood of Jesus and offered freely to those who call upon Him by faith.)
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
– John 5:24 KJV
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
– Romans 10:13 KJV -1 CORINTHIANS 15
-1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2. by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4. and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
Prayer of Salvation:
โDear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I know that I need you. I believe that you died on the cross for me. Forgive me of my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life to you. I receive you as my Saviour, come into my life and save me. Thank you for what you did on the cross for me. "Amen.โ

i’ll never forget when my high school jazz band played this at my local VFW back in 2005. Growing up in the shadow of 9/11 it was amazing to watch men in their 70s and 80s still as patriotic as when they were my age dancing along!
When I hear this song, I always think of Captain America since he also fought in WWII.

In what pieces of media has this been used? I’m willing to bet I’ve heard it in some of Tex Avery’s cartoons or Warner Bros’ but I don’t remember exactly. The upbeat melody always made me laugh.
