In this week’s episode, the boys must find an outfit inspired by 1970s fashion.

The boys are back, this week, each boy must find an outfit inspired by the fashion trends of the 1970s. Shaq travels to West London and meets Leroy, the owner of Mendoza, a store that specializes in 70s suits for men. Dex finds inspiration from the Black Panther movement and goes to Brixton’s Black Cultural Archives. Elias channels Elton John aesthetics and Danny investigates the New York punk scene.

Massive shout out to Mia Williams, founders of vintage clothing company Mad Seventies, for coming through and judging this week’s episode.

Make sure you stay tuned until the very end to see who wins this episode. See you next week!

The black panthers had a fashion style so underrated, it still looks so fresh.

  11. a on December 23, 2021 at 3:33 pm

70s fashion was so ahead of its time. 70s fashion literally looks like our modern fashion.

  31. Myra Groenewegen on December 23, 2021 at 3:55 pm

I like that two of the guys opted for soft textures and jacket looks that skewed surprisingly feminine. I actually like the purple jacket look better. It seems more practical and wearable and the hues make it sophisticated in a less humorous way, whereas it’s hard to imagine the white coat in anything but a party context — it feels a bit too much like a costume.
Meanwhile, if there’s one thing we’ve learned here, it’s that nobody can get enough of the badassery of leather jackets. It’d probably be wonderful to see a return to very specifically black panther referencing fashion among black people. For me, the item that is key to that recognition is this very specific narrow-brim flat top felt hat. The Ramones, I’m sure, made a huge fashion splash, but all the items in that outfit have become staples of everyday wear, to the point that it’s hard to imagine where creativity could be introduced to that formula. The pushy masculine posturing of punk rock also draws a lot more mixed feelings from me than the power posturing that define The Black Panthers’ style. The punk scene is constructive with anger and a voice for the underclass, at it’s best, but punk aesthetic is still very inherently pastey white and, when combined with the male posturing of young men and exaggerated anger over politics, it’s still a style that can be alienating. How and why a given person can best assume this look now could use more reflection here along the lines of what we heard aboutmany of the other styles.
