Mugabe’s Legacy: Zimbabwe’s Forgotten Children (Global Documentary) | Real Stories

[BAFTA-Winning Documentary]
Zimbabwe’s Forgotten Children tells the story of three children trying to survive in Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe, a country which was once the jewel of Africa but where the infrastructure is now in terminal collapse. Grace, Esther and Obert show us how they not only struggle to put food in their mouths but also desperately seek the money they need to pay next term’s school fees.

This may have aired in 2010 but the reality is there is another Esther somewhere right now, another Obert, another mother giving birth in the street somewhere not just in Zimbabwe and this is so heartbreaking

Let this be a warning… Social reform is a necessary goal for the improvement of every nation, but when used as a tool, or device, for political ends, it becomes a beast of uncontrollable destruction and misery for the entire society. This disaster has played out all over the world on many occasions, and is yet being played out even now. From South Africa to Venezuela, Europe to North America, social reform has become the means of obtaining political influence. The results will be no less desirable where ever this happens.

No one’s also mentioning the 17yr old who gave birth on the street? A poor baby being born and raised on the street 😭😢😢 and what happened to them ?

Im still trying to figure out how is the Goverment in charge of a school way out in the bush, and more concern about school fees and not shelter and starvation. So basically pick one starve or pay for school. I dont care how long this was, I give any money its going directly from my hand to the families, and I will fly myself and pay the fees directly. I wouldn’t give the Goverment a red sent you see how they handle money.

Where is/are the father(s) of the children of the dying woman??? How come a mother leave her struggling family, leaving children digging trash with their father to survive??? What a horrible situation in the country and people are mean to each other instead of helping each other. Tragic. Poor kids. 🙁 Poor Esther, neglected by mother, father and then uncle abuses her…

After watching this I went to the kitchen and look inside my fully stocked fridge and pantry, on the counter a fruit basket and my son will be like’there nothing to eat’..here you see a grandma who have to resort to eating ants and a child crying cause there is nothing. How fortunate and ungrateful we are. Lord forgive me😭

I thank God for my country Kenya, If a politician or police ever try to perform child labor nonsense he/she can be eaten alive! Not even a president can try such stupidity.

  24. Kasunsu on May 11, 2022 at 7:57 pm

I remember being sent back home for not having paid school fees. Even as a child, it is something that you will never forget. One of those memories that are stored in full HD. I am fully aware of how lucky I was to have acquired my bachelor’s degree. I have a job now. And every penny I save is specifically to fund the work that must be done to ensure that I can afford to put my kids through school and the kids of relatives that have fallen on hard times. A child that wants to study shouldn’t have to struggle with school fees.

Mugabe really ran his country into the ground with his corrupt actions. Not long before this doc was made, hyperinflation was at 2.2 million percent and his govt was printing $100 Trillion bills! And it’s poor children like these that suffer the most. I mean excluding the farmers and political opponents that were killed.

I’ve always asked myself whether the people documenting such films don’t feel compelled to help when they witness such drastic situations. 4th time I watch this documentary and it still beats me up every time.

  41. Claire Taylor on May 11, 2022 at 8:20 pm

Am I right in thinking……what exactly is the point of the "clean up" operations? Surely the person or pple making that descion would surely b thinking where wil pple go to live.I jus dont get it…….why demolish homes in one area so that the pple that lived in them go elsewhere and set up home the best that they can, also knowing that it’ll look very un tidy n look worse than the homes that were demolished in the first place…. Mayb I’m missing the point or mayb it was done to b seen as tho the government or leaders or whoever r and av actually cleaned up a certain area. But again ……. why. They must av been a reason for it but as far as I can see its not helped at all. If anything why not help actually clean up the area by ordering pple to to actually do any repairs on their homes and makin sure that the area is free of rubbish or help wit the pple to cover up sewers or help to educate how to maintain plumbing so it’s not over flowing or smelling. I don’t know there’s lots of ways they cud av helped them and got them to clean up the area. It’s hard not to say it the government or leaders or whoever thinking of nothing but themselves n their position or othawise they’d b doin wot actually wud b seen as a good thing and actually helping things not making them worse. Its ridiculous……..them deciding let’s demolish homes so we clean up an area but then we’ll see it worse wen they move on. I suppose they don’t care as long as the areas been demolished n the pple av moved along…..out of sight springs to my mind.

  43. Cindy on May 11, 2022 at 8:21 pm

This is one of the most heartbreaking documentaries I’ve ever seen. It hurts to know that these young children carry the weight of the world on their shoulders daily. The sweet little girl who cares for her baby sister. This is insane! She is just a little girl! I pray to God that things change for these people. No person in this world deserves to live like this. God please help and bless them.

I am so hurt 😞 how do some people sleep at night knowing what they’ve done to our beautiful Zimbabwe a country that i was born in, it’s absolutely such a shame, and to think Mugabe’s wife and children are living in luxury splashing money like crazy spending peoples taxes! what a shame, how about giving back what your hubby took away from he’s own people after people people voted for him… I’m sure people trusted him, anyway I’m not into politics because I hated what happened in Zimbabwe I hated voting I never actually voted to be honest because I knew there was no point Mugabe would win by fire by force so there…. but do you know what…they say what goes up has to come down their own is going to be a million times worse….what they doing now God is going to punish them…would it hurt for them to give $10millon back from their wealth, instead they busy buying expensive cars Batman cars worth millions total ignorance and nastiness, my son is the one that came to show me and he was like “mummy look at mananagwa’s son’s car, I said no papa it’s not mananagwa’s son it’s Mugabe’s son, and he said mummy where did he get money to buy such an expensive car? I thought Zimbabwe was going through a lot of poverty, I said “my son if I knew I’d tell you”…. I actually didn’t even know they were so damn rich and travelling in luxury, yoh…living in lavish hotels, but you know what God works in he’s own way, he doesn’t sleep at night or drink, they will get exactly what they deserve someday, I was watching their kids living it up in SA splashing money everywhere causing chaos in Santon in South Africa & their mum Grace saying that she’s worried about her sons & apparently they take drugs…I’m like yeah whatever you know exactly what’s happening so stop acting innocent she said that she thinks there’s a bad spirit amongst her sons and You know what she’s the evil spirit… her daughter living it up the blue top house or whatever it’s called I’m so annoyed and angry and hurt, and I hate having a go at their kids but now they old enough to read and see exactly what their father did to our country, and then you see this little girl ester with her poorly mummy and baby sister dad, is late, big sister fled, evil and uncaring uncle that brought my tears down, he was so cruel why would he lock the doors, it made me upset because even if she wanted to lay down with her lil sister she’s not allowed so mean, now at her tender age being sick and the worst of it all she has to help her mum and look after the baby 😞😞😞 this is just too much and neighbours looks like they are not bothered too even for the baby at least….people obviously turned their backs on them now it’s all on Ester’s shoulders and she’s so sad she doesn’t even have the strength to talk…..And when she was explaining her mother’s death you know that was a stab in the heart, that is going to torment her for ever….😢God I want to die what a shame that someone promised to do Zimbabwe better but instead took everything away from us, but you know what God is for us all and he doesn’t sleep and he doesn’t drink and he will intervene when the time is right like my mum always says to me you must never lose hope God is real and he’s alive and he works at he’s own time and sometimes he tests us in he’s own way and if little Ester is still alive today I know she’s better and she all grown and even stronger today because some situations bring someone out of hardship and you become even stronger ,I hope Ester’s sister Yvette didn’t leave her baby sisters for too long and that horrible uncle changed he’s ways because he’s nieces need him even more now, sometimes when some people are going through hard times friends or even family turn their backs on you and it’s a shame because we all don’t know our tomorrow….. tomorrow it me you or me, I was glad Yvette finally went home for that short while and her mum was so emotional when she saw her, I was just so happy for Ester at least bless her..Suffering from the worst virus, I wish there was somewhere other than Zimbabwe they could have left and had a better life and medication and recovered, I wish Ester her little sister Tino and big sis Yvette eventually got together because I can’t even imagine what happened to them I hope they managed to find peace and that Yvette would start using protection with her boyfriend for her own good, and I hope that what she saw what happened with her parents health and little siblings and that it will help open her eyes start thinking of what can happen to her tomorrow and I pray that God made and make’s it easier for all the children in Zimbabwe in Jesus name….watching in 2022 and I hope I knew how they are today 😟🙏

Gratitude is one thing that most of us don’t have, we complain that our lives are hard but some people don’t have food to eat clothes to wear and you don’t hear these people suffering from depression or committing suicide but it’s the ones who can afford 3 meals a day, good education and nice clothes that complain that they’re not happy.

  48. Coco Noel on May 11, 2022 at 8:25 pm

These types of documentaries are wrong because u only show what is going on without proposing solutions or asking for help. What about u reach out to the crypto community for help in order to raise money and create infrastructures because that money has no conditions! We need help in Africa yes!

  49. Claire Taylor on May 11, 2022 at 8:28 pm

I wud av not been able not say the children that I’d giv them the 2 dollars. I really wud av sed to them that I’d give it to them. Unless they not allowed to offer so that it documents the way things r n how bad they r. But even afta filming and it being off camera I wud find it hard not to help the ones that were filmed. I mean wots a cuple of dollars for the kids filmed, agen I jus don’t understand how they camera crew didn’t help. Unless they r strict rules n regs about helping children. But it’s a choice I think anyone wud want to make and wud very much consider helping them wit a cuple of dollars so they cud go to school. It jus seems the right thing to do if u r more fortunate to b able to do so. But I suppose too there’s all the rules and regs wit filming and helping or donating as the lady sed she has to b real careful coz they’re so concerned in being made to look bad…….sorry but theyv made themselves look bad already wot they mean is they don’t want exposing to b the horrible pple they r, or b exposed as to b shown jus how much wrong doing they av done or don’t want it to b shown wot state the country is in bcoz it really is a lot to b held accountable for even if they r not 100percent to blame for all that has happened causing the decline for the population, they certainly av caused a lot of it.. j
