Why Clothes Matter

FURTHER READING

“Once, we were all dressed by someone else. Parents picked out a T-shirt; the school dictated what colour our trousers should be. But at some point, we were granted the opportunity to discover who we might be in the world of clothes. We had to decide for ourselves about collars and necklines, fit, colours, patterns, textures and what goes (or doesn’t) with what. We learnt to speak about ourselves in the language of garments. Despite the potential silliness and exaggeration of sections of the fashion industry, assembling a wardrobe is a serious and meaningful exercise.”

Thank you so much for this valuable information about clothes. May I seek permission to use this video…?

I am one of those people that never really learned the language. I like certain things in certain contexts but have no clue how to “speak” of myself in clothes.

I mean a maid and a playboy bunny outfit will successfully make me exite in a ‘certain’ joy

"Sometimes the clothes do not make the man"…George Michael:) I have only recently come to terms with aspects of my self. Turned my self off in order to parent and try NOT to pass on the crap to the next generation…and so have had in my closet a 2nd date dress I have only worn once and not on a second date 🙁 because if I waited for that to happen well…it hasn’t happened yet so…but also came to realize I like certain things styles because of how they make me feel rather than the reception by others. I chose to go to school that had a school uniform because as a child I got hand me downs until I grew too big and then had no access to buying clothes that fit. Left me vulnerable to all sorts of crap. Started covering up. And that disconnection to self. Slowly…Over the past few months have been uncovering and recovering self…might just put on that second date dress sometime this spring and walk about.

Clothing is for protection. If you wear it for any other reason, you are attempting to acceptably fit within the vague prejudices of others.

Clothing styles and colours only have meaning because you believe that they do. At some point, somebody declared that a particular look had a particular a meaning, and the acceptance of that assertion created a self-fulfilling prophecy. Even though that particular look, intrinsically, conveys nothing, people now wear that clothing to convey that meaning, and interpret that clothing the same way, causing the meaning to perpetuate itself. If that particular clothing has been given an artificial meaning of sex, promiscuity, etc, anybody who sees it, will hypnotize themselves with that fantasy, from their preconceived delusion that it means those things, and they will arouse themselves, without any input from you.

You have been sold nonsense, and you continue to allow yourself to be controlled by the manufactured constructs of the fashion industry.

Too bad this is 90% women’s clothes and 10% men’s, instead of closer to 50-50. Women’s clothes is the bigger market, but still…

So, if you dont have money to buy clothes to Express your personality, you will be judge quickly by the people around you by the way you look. What a judgemental world we have.

  14. John Carpenter on July 26, 2021 at 9:19 pm

I’m red/green colorblind, so maybe what I’m “advertising” to others is not what they see in me!?

  15. Andy Nixon on July 26, 2021 at 9:19 pm

It’s good to see people who have made an effort with their appearance . They don’t have to wear anything expensive of particularly bold but it shows they have some pride in themselves and can reflect individuality. They are more at one with themselves.

  16. Jacob on July 26, 2021 at 9:20 pm

Just be yourself. People who judge you based upon clothing are a waste of time anyhow.

Trying to figure out how to tell a friend “you dress too slutty for the goals you are trying to reach”

  18. Piano Angel4 on July 26, 2021 at 9:21 pm

Whenever I clean up my closet, I mostly check on the tags of where is it made in. 😂🙊 But anyway, throughout this year, everyone is telling me to dress decently and it kind of hurt me a little because I didn’t wear nicely like what other girls wear. It was me with sweater and baggy pants. Now, I realized that they were giving me an honest advice, which is something I had to take. I guess clothes do matter, but right now Im just trying to figure things out and knowing myself better before I actually focus on what to wear.

I see others wear fancy clothes and I thought of them as smart or intelligent. Though I shouldn’t judge their personality just because of how they dress. 🤦

It’s always one of those FIRST IMPRESSIONS.

The most important thing is our CHARACTER & VALUES.

Makes sense why some of us would perpetually clash with parents over the choice of clothes, growing up… some of them might’ve thought it’s a small thing and it doesn’t matter, some of them might’ve been dressing in soulless ‘office’ attires for so long they’d forgotten or stopped caring about any other styles.
And especially when we’re teenagers, how we dress can be so so important; after all, they’re the ages of finding out who we are and how we wish to represent ourselves to the world..

  32. M on July 26, 2021 at 9:34 pm

Fashion is superficial and stupid, there is nothing meaningful about it, come on….

There are plenty of men in the world who like women that: do not smoke, that do not drink alcohol or have piercings and tattoos, that do not do drugs, that dress appropriately and is not revealing in reality or on social media.
P.S. your body is your choice, but it is also your brain, learn how to use it😊

Hmmm. Most of my shirts come from give aways at trade shows. I have no idea why that makes me so comfortable.

Dress shabby and ugly ? It’s who you are. Like a bad perfume.

  43. Ronald Brown on July 26, 2021 at 9:50 pm

To some people clothes are just material that’s stitched together. For others like myself, clothes is a way of expression. It’s like a second language and it’s the first that is used to Communicate with others. Clothes is art and without it a piece of the world would be empty.

This video gave me a huge respect towards clothing. I only used to have a certain respect for things such as my car, because if you don’t, I’d fucking crash. You respect things that keeps you alive and safe such as a car, your house, a firearm, etc. But clothes…. whether your a conformist, in a hard struggle, or in contentment, it shows who you are as a person. Which could be just as important as the other things that keeps you alive.
